This is another one from my list of “how to make tempeh taste delicious”: tempeh in Indian sauce.
Indian tempeh
Servings: 3
Cooking time: 20 min
Difficulty: easy
Ingredients
- 200 grams of tempeh
- 1 large onion
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1 inch piece of ginger
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon of garam masala
- chili flakes to taste
- half a can of coconut milk or cream (can also be more)
- freshly ground pepper
- salt
- drizzle of lemon (option)
- oil for frying (I used coconut oil)
Directions
- Cut the tempeh into small cubes.
- In a pan heat up the oil and add the teaspoon of cumin seeds and teaspoon of mustard seeds.
- Once they start to pop you can add the chopped onion until it is soft.
- You can now add the grated garlic and ginger.
- Add the cubed tempeh and let it fry for a few min.
- You can now add the 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of ground cumin, salt and chili flakes to taste.
- Once they release their flavors in few seconds, you can add the chopped tomatoes.
- After 1-2 min add the teaspoon of garam masala.
- At the end, pour in the coconut cream. I added a full can, since I like more sauce.
- Cook for 15 min.
- Finish with freshly ground pepper and an optional drizzle of lemon. You could also add coriander if you like it.
- It is chewy, incredibly flavorful and so easy to make!
