Arepas, faster than you can imagine and so delicious

I have recently discovered how easy and fast it is to make arepas and it needs to be shared. It takes literally 5 min to prepare it and then you simply fry it it a pan. So fast and satisfying to prepare it:

A perfect replacement when you run out of bread or if you want to have some sandwich like gluten free.

It is important to buy the right type of flour, so try to find the Mexican type that is very fine or this brand: https://pancorn.com/english/

arepas with barbecue chickenArepas
Preparation time: 5 min
Cooking time: 10 min
Servings: 6 arepas (2 people)
Difficulty: easy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of lukewarm water
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cup of pre-cooked white cornmeal
  • oil for frying
  • fillings (veggies, meat, cheese, see more below)

Directions

  1. Add the salt in the water and taste it, it should be pretty salty.
  2. Add the cornmeal bit by bit. Half way through it will thicken significantly and the second half it will magically become very elastic and easy to manipulate. Mix 1-2 min.
  3. Shape the dough into 6 balls.
  4. Flatten each ball into the arepas shape.
  5. In a hot pan with a bit of sunflower oil in it, fry the arepas on medium heat for 5 min on each side.
  6. Now the fun part is to assemble it. There are so many options and I only explored a few, but avocado and japaneo are going great next to some meat, some examples:
